  • A Way With Words

Saturday, we went out to the Grande Luxe Cafe, the Cheesecake Factory‘s more sophisticated sibling at the Garden State Plaza mall. They have really excellent food, and Katie got red velvet pancakes with cream cheese frosting (basically, she got cake for breakfast). After eating some of that, and drinking 2 glasses of fresh squeezed grapefruit juice, she was ready to pronounce the following about her meal:

“Everything at this table, if you take a bite of it and close your eyes, it tastes like you’re soaring through the air on a helicopter made of cheese.”

  • Pumpkin Time 2010 – This Time it’s Geeky.

This year’s installment of the annual Meyerson pumpkin extravaganza yielded some interesting results. We had planned on 2 pumpkins–I was going to just help the girls do theirs–but decided to add a third with me taking over the one Ellen was going to do. Good thing, too, as it took more than 5 hours…*rolls eyes*

To be honest, though, I think Katie’s pumpkin came out best of the three, but you can be the judge.

Ellen’s was the simplest, and only took a short time, but came out pretty cool. You have to know the video game Portal and the geeky comic it’s based on from Penny Arcade, but anyone who does will instantly recognize it.

Katie also chose a video game theme, the Big Daddy from one of her favorite games ever, Bioshock. She did an amazing job on this one, and did everything herself. All I did was tape the pattern down and cut the top open.

I’m not sure people will recognize my entry, but I’ll leave you with a clue…

    The Matrix Has You.

Here’s a slightly darker picture of mine. I couldn’t decide which one I liked better.

  • Katie X

Today’s my Katie-bug’s 10th birthday! When she awoke, the balloon fairy had ravaged her room yet again, but sadly it will be for the last time. Just as candy doesn’t taste as good when you’re 10, so does the balloon fairy cease to come to spread inflated-rubber joy.

Right now, Katie, Kim and Ellen are trekking off to get the birthday present that means most to her…Gerbils. Yes, we acquiesced to her continued badgering for a pet and in the last week she’s obtained a new tree frog (Lyra!) and now a pair of gerbils. She is bouncing off the walls in anticipation. Picture of the little guys to come soon.

  • Practice, Practice…uh, no.

Katie’s having a guitar lesson. Her teacher is saying “you need to practice this after I leave.”

Katie: Can’t i do it after I go out and play?
Teacher: No, you really should do it now.
    Katie: Come on…
    Me: Katie, stop whining.
Katie: I’m not whining, I’m trying to find a loophole.
Me (literally out loud): Oh, Jesus…

Do I really need this? Come on…

  • Dim Sum through a 9 year old lens

Katie and I are driving home tonight from Tae Kwan Do, when we pass the place near us that used to do a nice Dim Sum brunch. They’ve been closed more than a year now, so Katie was reminiscing.

K: You know what I liked that they had? There was this one thing that had sort of wet meat in soft bread.
    D: Um…wet meat?
K: Yeah. It was sweet and the outside was white sort of?
    D: a roast pork bun?
    K: Yeah! That was it.
    D: Wet meat….ew.

Bet that description would NOT do well on a menu…

  • The Glasses Press

A few weeks ago, Katie decided that she needed to write a newspaper. Her first thought, I believe, was that she would sell it to our neighbors. That’s my little capitalist right there. However, quickly abused of this notion by us, she decided to write it anyway and spent quite a bit of time writing assorted articles, including a very nice review of Wall-E.

So, without further ado, The Glasses Press is available here

    Way to go, Buggie!

  • Achy Buggy Heart

We were just watching horseracing on TV as Katie saw it on the guide and wanted to watch the horses. She’s under the belief–the unbelievably mistaken belief–that there is some way we will get her a pony. I think she would be fine with it living in her room as far as she’s concerned, although she might not think so when it filled her shoes with crap.

Anyway, as we watch the race and are commenting on the horses, Katie says (so we can all clearly hear):

    “My heart aches with longing…”

    Uh huh.

  • So Many Pees

I’m in the kitchen feeding Katie, Ellen and our neighbor child Claire a nice fresh pizza and I get into this conversation with Ms. Bug:

Katie: Dad, when are you going to have your own pizza parlor?
    Me: Not for years, Bug.
K: I have a great name for it. You could call it Paul’s Perfect Pizza Parlor.
M: thats a pretty good name, but it’s a lot of P’s. I try to keep the pee away from the food (lame joke as I’m walking out of the kitchen).
K (to my retreating back): But Dad, alliteration is good in a restaurant name!

I just stopped, turned around, stared and said something like…”uh. right.”

    She’s 7.

  • 2 Packs, yo?

We’re on the way to our accountant, playing a game at Katie’s suggestion where someone says a proper noun (usually a name) and then the next person has to say another name that starts with the letter that the last person’s choice ended with, e.g., if I say “Batman”, the next person would have to pick a name that starts with “N”. So we’re going around dozens of times and I say one that ends in an R. Kim’s next and says “R2D2”. Katie comes next and, not surprisingly, is sort of stuck coming up with a name that begins with the number 2:

Me: How about 2Pac Shakur (which is also spelled “Tupac”).
Katie: OK. (mumbles something) Ellen, it’s “n” to you now.
    Me: wait..N? shouldn’t it be R?
Katie: no, chicken ends in N.
    Me: um…chicken?
Katie: yeah, didn’t you say “2 packs of chicken?”

There’s the new king of rap: 2pack of chicken. Word up, wingboy.

  • It’s a Major Award!

Never to be outdone, Bug entered a poetry contest this week at school. Not only did she write a wonderful poem, but she won first place for her whole grade with this very timely and hopeful poem:

    The Fantastic Score

It is University of Phoenix Stadium…

    Quarterback throws the ball,
    Punter kicks the ball,

    Somebody yelling,
    “GO GIANTS!”

    Somebody selling,
    “Peanuts, Peanuts For Sale!”

    GIANTS SCORE!

Giants and Patriots bend, the last play,

    There it goes!

    Touchdown!

    GIANTS WIN!

    Yes!

Let’s hope life imitates art. Great job, Bug!
